This mandolin is made of extra fancy curly maple, it has an X braced spruce top, a dark sunburst finish and is topped in nitrocellulose lacquer. The ebony fret board is radiused, has a 1 18 nut width, a scooped extension and modern size frets. As expected, from Carlson era Flatirons, this mandolin has a big sound with great bark and punchiness. When first received, this mandolin had been played extensively and was in need of new frets, hardware and a set up. We had the fret board planedlightly radiused and new frets installed. We installed new, gold Schaller tuners and a matching Bill James tailpiece. The set up included a new pearl nut and new Cumberland Acoustic ebony bridge. The lacquer finish was cleaned and revealed very strong cosmetics, with just a few very light handlingplaying marks. In every way, this mandolins appearance and performance are representative of this benchmark, old brand and the early, Montana made mandolins of Steve Carlson.
